Mattah Prayer Stick StaffLane Beading
Australian Green Opal Chalcedony

This mattah (pronounced: mah-TAH), or prayer stick, or prayer staff, is made of high quality materials, and carefully and artfully worked. All the scarves are hemmed. The lane beading is hand worked. All the leather is real; the feathers and stones are real.

I do not sell finished mattahs due to shipping challenges. If you are interested in purchasing the components of the mattah and assembling one yourself, please contact me. As for pricing, it'll be expensive--probably around $250. Besides time and travel expense required for finding and purchasing the raw materials, it also took many hours to turn, press, pin, and sew all the scarf hems. The hand worked beading took many hours. Braiding the cords, decorating them, stringing the stones, setting the cabochon--this is a very time-consuming project, as all quality hand work is.

  • I use only legal feathers: wild turkey, guinea fowl, peacock.
  • Beads are glass seed beads--very jewel-like.
  • Stones are all semi-precious polished gemstones: garnet, amethyst, aventurine, tiger eye, sodalite, turquoise.
  • The gemstone cabochon will vary subject to availability. Setting is sterling silver wire.
  • All the cords are braided suede leather.
  • The hand grip is smooth leather, heavy cowhide.
  • Pole is 6 foot length of pine closet pole, stained with Zar a medium brown.
  • Nine hemmed scarves of 1/8 yd. nylon silk-look and nylon blend metallic fabrics
  • Glued with Tacky Glue ®
